Books and Registers
Starting in 2007, SWANA changed its registration policies to closely mirror ASVH’s. This has resulted in some exciting changes, including the addition of many registration options and the dissolution of the “Appendix” book. (Horses registered under the former “Appendix” book are still fully recognized by SWANA.)

SWANA’s Books and Registers
All horses are evaluated on a case-by-case basis following these guidelines:

Book I

  • Sire is a licensed SWB or is approved to breed to SWB mares
  • Dam is SWB with Book I or Book II papers, or an approved warmblood or thoroughbred mare
  • Both sire and dam have at least 3 known generations

Book II

  • Sire is a licensed SWB or is approved to breed to SWB mares
  • Dam’s maternal grandsire or maternal great-grandsire is an SWB (or approved breed) that is not approved for breeding
  • Upgrade possibilities: With a fully approved sire, the offspring of this horse may be eligible to receive Book I papers.

Book III

  • Book III is given in rare circumstances. One of the parents is a SWB in Book IV or in Register A, B, or C who has excelled in sport. If this parent is the dam, she must also be in Studbook B.
  • The other parent is fully approved.
  • Upgrade possibilities: With a fully approved sire, the offspring of this horse may be eligible to receive Book I papers.

Book IV

  • Sire has been evaluated by the stallion committee, but was not approved at the time of breeding and is Book I SWB (or equivalent in an approved breed).
  • Dam is a Book I SWB (or equivalent in an approved breed).
  • Upgrade possibilities: With a fully approved sire, the offspring of this horse may be eligible to receive Book II papers.

Register A

  • Sire is a Book I SWB (or equivalent in an approved breed) but had not been evaluated by the stallion committee at the time of breeding
  • Dam is a Book I SWB (or equivalent in an approved breed).
  • Upgrade possibilities: With a fully approved sire, the offspring of this horse may be eligible to receive Book II papers.

Register B

  • Sire is a licensed SWB or is approved to breed to SWB mares
  • Dam’s pedigree is not acceptable due to unknowns or unacceptable breed
  • Upgrade possibilities: Offspring may be eligible to receive Book I or Book II, depending on its pedigree.

Register C

  • Sire’s pedigree is not acceptable due to unknowns or unacceptable breed
  • Dam’s pedigree may or may not be acceptable
  • Upgrade possibilities: With a fully approved sire, offspring may be eligible to receive Register B papers.
